Children enjoying a Swim Safe session last summer

In the mid-1860s, Lewis lobbied for the provision of swimming lessons in schools to prevent children getting into difficulty in the water and to improve survival times if they did get into trouble, giving lifeboat crews a better chance of reaching them.

Today, we’ve partnered with the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) to help thousands of children stay safe in open water through free Swim Safe sessions for schools and families, which are held every summer.
